Team Analysis – An easy way of collecting data on your team during a match

Why?

Match analysis from an object and subject view can assist you in identifying weaknesses and strengths within your team overall or units and individual. This can help you in planning reactive sessions into your syllabus to help solve any issues that arise from the analysis. It can also help with showing your team’s application from the training ground to the pitch of sessions that have already been worked on.

Who can collect the data?

Assistant coach - A great way to up skill your assistants in their observational skills on identifying weaknesses and strengths in areas of both technical and tactical.

Parent - A great way to include the parents that show their support week in week out on match day. Not only will this give the parents a better understanding of the game but it will also show the development process and include them within the process.

Player - As a coach we have to consider each player is different in how they learn and we have to change our coaching style from command, question and answer, Observation and feedback, guided discovery and trial and error and I believe this opportunity will give the player the theory on the tactical and technical side of the game.

You - I normally pick the first half so you can manage the second half or if you have an assistant you can do the full game and I would advise a high vantage point so you can see all of the game and this will give you a better idea of your teams overall play in all the moments of the game. Not only will this give everyone a better understanding of the game but It’s a great way to include everyone within and around your team to help aid the development of the team.

What can be collated?

  • Passing - Retained, loss, direction and distance
  • Receiving - Position, back/front foot
  • Tackles won, lost and interceptions
  • Shots – On/off target, left or right foot and where
  • Distribution from Goal keeper

You can focus on an individual, Unit or the whole team. On the example below, I focused on the two CDM’s on their receiving and distribution both from an objective and subjective process and from this I planned a reactive session to work on the issues that arose from the analysis.

How?

 

Key for analysis

  • Passing – Retained (R), loss (X), direction (Direction arrow) and distance (length of arrow)
  • Receiving – Position (mark on pitch with shirt number), back (B)/front foot (F)
  • Tackles won (W), lost (L) and interceptions (I)
  • Shots – On(O)/off target (X), left (L) or right (R) foot and where (mark on the pitch with shirt number)
  • Distribution from Goal keeper (direction and length of arrow with R or X from the passing example)
